Japanese Ki Centers and Christianity

As both a Christian and a Reiki practitioner, I often encounter confusion of how I can intertwine the principles and practice of both. Surely Eastern practices of healing and energy cannot be Biblical, except that they are. Reiki* is the Japanese practice of energy healing. It consists of Gassho (meditation), Reiji Ho (invocation) and Chiryo (treatment). Chiryo invovles the use of various hand positions used to interact with the receiver at various points on their body, commonly known as chakras. In this article, I won't get into the scientific validity of Reiki and want to focus on justifying the practice and use of chakras from a Christian perspective as there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding.

Let's put aside the fact that Dr. Usui was a Christian preacher or that he discovered Reiki specifically while looking for an answer regarding how Christ healed through the laying-on of hands, which is mentioned numerous times in the Bible and exists in nearly all cultures globally, and instead discuss the chakras themselves.

The chakras, also called Ki Centers (this term will be important later), are located at various physical points on the body. There are minor chakras in addition to the main ones shown in the image but I am not going to discuss them here. Any scholar of theology will understand the importance of numerology. There are 7 main chakras, seven being the number for God Himself as it symbolizes completion and perfection.

But even more significant is the fact we are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27). Considering no two people are perfectly identical, this is a reference to us as spiritual beings. Ki 気, most commonly translated as energy, refers to a metaphysical life force we have inside of us; what some may call our spirit. Interestingly, Ki may also be translated as spirit. So our chakras are quite literally the locations where our spirit is most powerful in relation to various aspects of your life. Our life force, this spirit or energy, is itself a gift from God.

Our very bodies themselves were created by God so therefore nothing about them can be in contradiction to God. Because the chakras are physical locations on the human body, their very existence is proof of being from God.

The chakras themselves are referred to in the Old Testament innumerable times. Genesis 28:12 states “and he had a dream, and behold a ladder was set on the earth with its’ top reaching to heaven. And behold the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” The ladder is the chakras. And the lower Mooladhara end is resting on the earth. That is the lowest of the human chakras, having to do with the planes of everyday material existence. The top of the ladder is reaching the heavens. That means that the ascent through the chakras leads a human being to liberation/salvation.

In the New Testament, book of Revelation 1:20, we see reference again to the chakras. Where it states, “as for the mystery of the seven stars, which you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lamp stands. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. And the seven lamp stands are the churches.” It is quite clear in this verse that the seven lamp stands and the seven churches are indeed the chakras. The lampstands themselves a
re symbols of spiritual light shining out to a spiritually dark world. When the Holy Spirit enters us, we now have true light and are no longer filled with darkness. The church leads people to this light, Jesus Christ. Six is the number of man, and with Christ, we are made perfect–7. We know that light contains color as seen in the rainbow, itself caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light. The rainbow is God's gift to the world and to humanity following the Great Flood, and the colors of the chakras correlate to the colors of the rainbow. We can see these wind vortexes as beacons of light, vibrating a spectrum of colors that are crucial for proper functioning and health of the whole body, and they are revealing. The body of Christ brings truth, color, and real healing to the world with the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit.

And the seven stars that are mentioned are the preceding deities, referred to as angels in each chakra. Ironically (or not so much at this point), there are six archangels that, together with the King, make up the seven Spirits of God or Sons of God. The colors used to represent each archangel correlate to the colors of the rainbow, which are used to express the various chakras. There are no coincidences...

*Please note: As in all endeavors, there are many unqualified practitioners and teachers spreading Reiki and it is imperative to inquire as to the background and training of the practitioner before engaging in any practice of the art. Unfortunately, many of the practitioners of Western Reiki received their certification from a weekend course and have very little actual experience. This is in direct contradiction to the traditional Japanese practice of Reiki, which requires years of internship and study before one is eligible for certification as a Level 1 practitioner, let alone Reiki Master.
